Story:
Père Regis’ simple, fervent preaching stirred the hearts of all who heard him. He spoke with the clarity of the Gospel, and people of all classes, from the humblest peasant to the wealthy merchant, were drawn to his message of faith and love. He had a special place in his heart for the poor and the marginalized, the prisoners and the sick. He spent countless hours tending to their needs, begging for food and clothing for them, and organizing social services. He even established a lace factory to provide work for women who would otherwise have been forced into prostitution, earning him the title of the patron saint of lacemakers.
One cold winter night, as he traveled through a treacherous mountain pass to reach a remote village, Père Regis lost his footing and fell, breaking his leg. His companion, a lay brother, helped him continue on their journey. Despite the pain, Père Regis insisted on being taken directly to the confessional upon their arrival, where he remained for hours, hearing confessions and offering spiritual guidance. When he finally emerged, his leg was miraculously healed.
Even in the final days of his life, suffering from a lung ailment, Père Regis insisted on preaching a parish mission and hearing confessions. He died on December 31, 1640, with the words, "Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit."
