Story:

Left of Joseph Statue

As a youth, Gabriel was known for his refined tastes and passion for dancing and the theatre. But he also harbored a deep well of faith, nurtured by his devout family. He would sometimes slip away from worldly amusements to find solace in prayer. His life, however, was not without its sorrows. He experienced the tragic loss of his mother and several siblings, including a brother who died by suicide. These profound losses deepened his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially under her title of Our Lady of Sorrows. He found comfort and strength in her maternal embrace. One day, while attending a religious procession, Francesco experienced a profound call to religious life. He felt Our Lady's gaze upon him, heard a quiet yet insistent voice in his soul, urging him to keep his promise to enter a religious order. Against his father's initial objections, Francesco entered the Passionist congregation, taking the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. He chose this name to express his love for Mary and his desire to share in her sorrows. Gabriel embraced his new life with joy and dedication. He lived the Passionist Rule faithfully, demonstrating remarkable humility, obedience, and charity. Though his time in the monastery was relatively short, only four years, his deep faith and devotion to the Passion of Christ left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He tragically contracted tuberculosis and died at the young age of 24, before being ordained a priest. Despite his short life, Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows' example of courageous faithfulness and profound love for God and Mary continues to inspire countless people today. He is recognized as the patron saint of Catholic youth, students, and seminarians. His life reminds us that holiness is attainable for everyone, even in the midst of worldly pursuits and personal struggles.
