Story:

Left of Joseph Statue

Norbert lived in 12th century Germany. Though raised with privilege and intelligence, he enjoyed a comfortable, worldly life. One day, as he rode through a violent storm near Xanten, lightning startled his horse, throwing him to the ground. He lay there, stunned and shaken, for a long while. This harrowing experience triggered a profound conversion. He left his imperial court position and embarked on a path of intense prayer and reflection. He sought guidance and was eventually ordained a priest. Now a changed man, he became an itinerant preacher, traveling through Western Europe, preaching repentance, peace, and moral reform, even combating heresy. Many were drawn to his message and followed him. In his later life, Norbert founded the order of the Norbertines, who are dedicated to a communal life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, emphasizing prayer and service to the Church.
