About:

Despite their social differences, Flavia Julia Helena married a Roman official, Constantius Chlorus. Together, they had a son, Constantine. However, Constantius later divorced Helena for political gain, marrying the daughter of Emperor Maximian. Helena then faded into obscurity for a time. Years later, Constantine ascended to the throne as Emperor, and showered his mother with honor and titles. It was during this period that Helena converted to Christianity, and her faith became a driving force in her life. She used her influence and wealth to support the faith, engaging in charitable works, freeing prisoners, and providing for the poor. Her deep piety is considered a potential source of inspiration for Constantine, who eventually legalized Christianity with the Edict of Milan. On a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Helena dedicated churches at sites like the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives. Tradition credits Helena with discovering the True Cross during this pilgrimage. She also responsible for bringing the Scala Sancta, or Holy Stairs, from Jerusalem to Rome in the 4th century. These stairs are believed to be the same ones that Jesus climbed during his trial before Pontius Pilate.
