Prayer:

Saint Maria Goretti, Lily of Purity, you chose to sacrifice your life rather than give in to sin. Look with pity upon us, sinners, who are beset by so many temptations in this modern world. Help us to imitate your angelic virtue and to prefer death to sin. Obtain for us the grace to flee anything that could offend Jesus or stain our souls with sin.

About:

When Maria was just 11 years old, as the eldest daughter, she was burdened with the responsibilities of caring for her younger siblings and managing the household chores while her mother toiled in the fields. Though deprived of formal schooling, Maria possessed a deep faith that illuminated her every action. Their humble home was shared with the Serenellis, another family struggling to make ends meet. Among them was 20-year-old Alessandro, a young man who harbored dark intentions towards Maria. He frequently harassed her, making inappropriate advances which Maria, rooted in her unwavering faith, steadfastly rejected. She knew that to succumb to his desires would be a sin against God. One fateful afternoon, Alessandro's persistence escalated into violence. He dragged Maria into the house and attempted to sexually assault her. Maria, despite her young age and the terror she faced, bravely resisted. She cried out, "No! It is a sin! God does not want it!" Her unwavering resolve only fueled Alessandro's rage. He stabbed her repeatedly with a dagger, wounding her fourteen times. Maria's family, drawn by the commotion, rushed inside to find her bleeding on the floor. She was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent surgery without anesthesia. Despite the agony, Maria's final act was one of incredible mercy: she forgave Alessandro, expressing her desire to see him in heaven. She died the following day, a virgin martyr, and one of the youngest saints to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Alessandro was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 30 years in prison. During his imprisonment, he experienced a profound conversion after seeing a vision of Maria offering him lilies, symbols of purity. Upon his release after 27 years, he sought out Maria's mother and begged for her forgiveness. She granted it, echoing Maria's earlier act of mercy. Alessandro later became a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, living a life of repentance and devotion until his death. He even attended Maria's canonization in 1950, a testament to the transformative power of forgiveness.
