Story:

As pope, Damasus was a formidable leader, solidifying the authority of the Roman See and championing orthodox Christian beliefs against the rising tide of heresies like Arianism. He convened synods, condemning unorthodox teachings and sending envoys to Constantinople to advocate for the Nicene Creed. Damasus recognized the burgeoning importance of Sacred Scripture in a changing world. It was a pivotal moment for the Church, as the Bible was not yet definitively organized. He entrusted a task of monumental significance to a brilliant scholar, St. Jerome: to revise the existing Latin translations of the Bible into a single, accurate text. Jerome’s dedication, supported by Damasus, eventually produced what became known as the Vulgate, which shaped Christianity for over a millennium. Damasus dedicated himself to honoring the martyrs of the faith. He restored and made accessible the Roman catacombs, the underground labyrinths where countless Christians had found their final resting places. For these heroes of the faith, he penned eloquent epitaphs in verse, inscribing their stories on stone tablets.
